Jail overcrowding was a serious problem for Hays County. Immediately after taking office in November 2010, I focused on a complete jail repair and clean up. Subsequently, I recalled all Hays County inmates from another county that were being housed at the tune of $50 per day per person. Bringing all the inmates back saved in excess of $500,000 per year in taxpayers dollars.
"For a number of years, I worked closely within the Hays County judicial system as well as the Commissioners Court to continually address the jail overcrowding conditions." In 2016 a public safety bond was presented to the voters of Hays County and passed. A portion of the bond was to address the overcrowding conditions of the jail. Construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed in 2020. This construction will provide a state-of-the-art addition to the jail which is designed to eventually house 1,000 inmates.
